Poor level of Kenya men’s basketball game exposed by Burundi in Zone 5 contest

Despite a proliferation of men’s teams in both the Kenya Basketball Federation [KBF] top league and Division One competitions, standards appear dismally low to the extent that Kenya, who in the past presented strong teams in Africa championships, find it hard to hold their ground even in East Africa

KENYA men’s basketball slumped to a new low when the country’s representatives lost to a Burundi team in the Final of the Africa Zone 5 Championship.

In a totally expected scenario, Burundi’s Urunani on Sunday overpowered Kenya Ports Authority [KPA] 68-59 in the final at the Makande Hall in Mombasa.

Salvage pride

Kenya had to salvage her pride with victory in the women’s championship where their leading team, United States International University-Africa [USIU-A], came on top in an all-Kenyan final, thrashing KPA 63-28.

Four teams from Zone 5 – USIU-A, KPA (women) and Urunani, KPA (men) will represent the region at the Africa Club Championships in November in Tunisia.

Fine run

On their way to the Final, USIU-A who had a fine run throughout the tournament defeated Uganda’s KCCA 74-48 while KPA beat Berco Stars of Burundi 61-48.

Despite a proliferation of men’s teams in both the Kenya Basketball Federation [KBF] top league and Division One competitions, standards appear dismally low to the extent that Kenya, who in the past presented strong teams in Africa championships, find it hard to hold their ground even in East Africa.
