Kenya women successfully launch bid for Rio de Janeiro Olympics beach volley

As the Kenya women wrapped up first place victory in the round-robin play during the Olympics beach volleyball qualifiers, Burundi upstaged the Kenya to win the men’s category in Dar es Salaam


KENYAN women won the opening tournament of the 2016 Olympic Games beach volleyball championship qualifier during the sub-zone eliminations at Mbalamwezi Beach Hotel in Dar es Salaam.

Women and men’s teams from Tanzania, Burundi and Kenya took part. Others expected, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Somalia, gave it a miss.

Surprised

As the Kenya women wrapped up first place victory in the round-robin play, Burundi upstaged the Kenya to win the men’s category.

Kenya coach Patrick Owino whom Tanzania newspaper ‘Daily News’ quoted said that Kenya were surprised at the skills of the Burundi men.

Second leg

Burundi and Kenya teams will now advance to the next qualifying round to be played later. A Kenya Volleyball Federation [KVF] calendar released earlier has the Sub-zone 5/Pool 8 event ear marked for Bujumbura, Burundi between March 9 and 12. It is subject to confirmation.

The four Kenyan teams at the tournament in Dar es Salaam:

WOMEN:

Team 1: Edna Rotich & Eunice Maiyo (Aspire)

Team 2: Naomi Too & Gladys Wangui (Diva)

Before travelling to Dar es Salaam, the Kenyan teams enjoyed useful training facilities when Sun Palm Beach Hotel and Resort [Watamu, North Coast] who accommodated them ahead of the Olympic qualifiers.

They had a week’s accommodation and access to training facilities extended to them by hotel proprietor Eleonora Cozzi.

Benefit

Ben Juma, the Kenya Beach Volleyball Commission chairman said the Kenyan teams benefited immensely and their morale was high as they went for the Continental Cup and Olympic qualifiers.

Meanwhile the beach volleyball tournament in Tanzania got off the ground a busy international calendar for Kenya teams.

Under-20s

First out of the country will be the women’s Under-20 team for the African Championship to take place in Cairo, Egypt between February 24 and March 2. The team is currently in training.

In build-up matches at the Safaricom Arena in the Moi International Sports Centre, the team has already beaten Nairobi Water Company 3-2 but had earlier lost to Kenya Prisons women 0-3 (25-27, 7-25, 18-25)
