Fin holds Safari lead hoping mechanical gremlins are sorted out for final day, Sunday

A tough opening section on Day Two in Lengetia had several drivers limping to the control. Later, Kenya champion Baldev Chager reported his Mitsubishi Evox was mis-firing

FINNISH driver Tapio Laukkanen on Saturday held a five minute lead at the end of Day 2 of the 63rd Safari Rally.

The leaders returned to the Agricultural Society of Kenya [Ask] show ground in Meru, the control section No. 8 and Laukkanen, winner of the recent Kisumu Rally in Nyanza and of the Kenya National Rally Championship [KNRC] held the comfortable lead [time – 1:57.37] from a surprising Jaspreet Chatthe (2:02.26). Ian Duncan (2:02.55), Carl “Flash” Tundo (2:04.03) and Kenya rally champion Baldev “Boldy” Chager (2:04.51) completed the top five.

Mechanics

Laukkanen checked in the final service with transmission problems and said: “It has not helped me in the last couple of stages. I am waiting for the mechanics to work on the car. I am sure it will be sorted. I am not worried ‘cos my speeds will remain the same as long as long as the car is intact. I have a good lead…”

Earlier drama in the Safari included at Lengetia which proved a hard nut to crack for several drivers. Apart from a troubled Raaji Bharij, Onkar Rai’s car came limping on three wheels after damaging the rear left trailing arm. Tej Rai’s Mitsubishi had the rear bumper hanging and Jasmeet Chana had transmission failure.

Light rain

Later, when Kenya champion “Boldy” Chager reported to the final control, he said his Mitsubishi Evox engine was misfiring.

The weather went to the forecast: light rains reported overnight in both Nanyuki and Meru. At the end of Day 2,  53 cars are still running.

Laukkanen, driving a Subaru Impreza had won Day One‘s three stages after the start from Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Conference Centre and on to Konza and Machakos. Cars then had an overnight stay at KICC before leaving at dawn on Saturday for Meru to tackle 420km through Lengetia in Naro Moru, Loldoiga in Nanyuki, Ngare Ndare and Nkunga before finishing at the ASK Show Ground in Meru.
