See faces, results of Kenya’s first round trials for IAAF WU18 Championships, Nairobi 2017

There was cut-throat competition at Kip Keino Stadium Eldoret on Thursday and Friday and fine-tuned qualifiers should provide fireworks for the final Team Kenya selection meet at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi on June 12-13

‘Nyanza Express’: Mary Moraa of the Nyanza South region was in electrifying form at Kip Keino Stadium on Thursday and Friday, sweeping to victories in all the girls’ sprints at the Team Kenya pre-trials for the IAAF World U18 Championships. A virtual pick for the team, Mary must surely brace for a ‘Baptism of Fire’ from, for instance, Jamaican and other Caribbean sprinting talent which is expected to be the big draw at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on July 12-16. THE Team Kenya pre-trials for the IAAF World Under-18 Championships, Nairobi 2017 ended at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Eldoret on Friday afternoon, the wheat being separated from the chaff and promising thrills at the final selection at the Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi on June 12 and 13 looming large.

In the races where Kenya dominates on the world scene — middle and long distance — the youngsters aged 17 or younger showed exact characteristics of their seniors in major world events. Virtually entire fields in most of the events performed well within IAAF’s set qualifying marks.

But even bigger interest was in the events that Kenya athletes don’t get opportunity to take part at say World Championships and the Olympics. Being the World U18 Championships, Kenya has the opportunity to throw in a full quota of competitors in the 21-event programme. The youngsters have come out, to grab at any cost, the life-time chance to face the best in the world at World Championships.

In the two-day action at Kip Keino Stadium Kenya resembled a nation that has talent in all disciplines including throwing and jumping, the low marks, vis-à-vis the set qualifying standards notwithstanding.

Ita Nao (61.65m) of South Rift won from a large field of boys’ javelin the event where compatriot  Julius Yego is the world champion (92.72m – Africa record). Young Nao said all boys were motivated by their hero Yego and explained that, despite age difference, the disparity in the distance: “I love javelin and have always thrown what I think is a decent distance among my peers in the schools. I know what I need to do in the future; [Julius] Yego goes to the gym, that’s why he’s so great, I have never been to a gym in my life but I will from now on.”
