Top three almost through, leaving raging battle between Kabras, Mwamba, Homeboyz

A winning Impala in the closing stages gives them an outside chance in play-off qualification but No. 8 Harlequins are all but out

AFTER Saturday’s Kenya Cup rugby matches, Nakuru, KCB and Strathmore appear sure candidates for the four-team play-offs and that for the fourth slot it will be a dogged battle between No.4 Kabras Sugar, Mwamba and Homeboyz with Impala having an outside chance. No. 8 Harlequins are all but out.

Kabras Sugar picked up a vital losing point in the 16-18 home defeat by Nondescripts at the Kakamega Show Ground and the crunch will be the sugar millers’ meeting with Mwamba in Nairobi on Saturday.

Bonus

Mwamba fell 12-24 at Nakuru where, if they had picked up a win and bonus points, it would have made their life very easy because their challengers for the play-off spot — Kabras, Homeboyz and Quins, all lost.

The Black Shirts, depending on whether with home advantage they will beat Kabras in Nairobi, are fancied to have a winning streak in the final matches pitting them against: (Away) Mombasa; (Home) Kenyatta University Blak Blad and (Away) University of Nairobi Mean Machine.

Navigate

Kabras on the other hand, after their fixture against Mwamba, will have to navigate through supremely difficult matches in their remainders: (H) Homeboyz; (A) Harlequins; (H) Strathmore.

Mwamba (25 points) will, however, want to beat Kabras (31) while gaining maximum five points and keeping Kabras pointless. Then the Black Shirts, while going for (very possible maximum points) over Mombasa, Blak Blad and Mean Machine, must hope for Kabras to falter in the closing stages.

Dealt blow

Homeboyz (23 pts) crumbled 5-41 against KCB on Saturday and with that dealt their qualification hopes a blow. The Deejays’ three remainders are a huge mountain to climb: v (H) Nakuru; (A) Kabras; (A) Quins.

Impala (22pts) can continue with their rejuvenation and winning streak and steal the final slot. While relying on the teams above them to falter, the Red Shirts can conjure wins in; v (H) Mean Machine, (A) Catholic University and (A) Western Bulls.

Relegation

Quins (20 pts) are virtually out and furthermore they have a difficult upcoming tie with,  (H) KCB and (A) Nakuru,  before going to Mombasa.

Bottom, winless and pointless Mombasa are sure relegation candidates and the other slot will be filled by Catholic University (4pts) or Mean Machine (7). Machine did themselves a huge favour by beating the Catholics 17-5 at Lang’ata on Saturday.
