Beware Gor, in Mombasa, Bandari are desperate for a bounce-back

There are other exciting match-ups this weekend, not least that the other crowd puller, the struggling AFC Leopards, will bet home --at Mumias Sugar Company’s Sports Complex -- on Saturday to Nakuru All Stars

GOR Mahia got through a tempestuous match with Tusker ending in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening and they will be wary of their next stop — Mombasa against Bandari at the Municipala instead of the usual Kenya Ports Authority [KPA] Sports Club,  Mbaraki on Sunday.

Team and supporters will still be living on their nerves because a good run of three wins to open the season has suddenly turned into three without victory.

Bandari maybe looking short in confidence but their two home losses in a row after a 2-0 win over KRA on the first day have somewhat been unfortunate. The Coastals surrendered 0-1 to Mathare United and were then edged 2-1 by Thika United.

Farthest destination

Away travel has seen narrow losses to Nairobi City Stars (0-1) and Tusker one of the Brewers’ goals in the 2-1 win being a ‘soft’ penalty award.  That Twahir Muhidin boys then went on to pull off a 2-2 draw in the farthest league destination — Bukhungu, Kakamega – against Western Stima, suggests Bandari have some fight.

Beware Gor. Bandari are desperate for a bounce-back.

Gor Mahia were themselves very much looking for that when they met Tusker on Wednesday. The previous 0-2 defeat by Nakuru All Stars came completely unexpected and that after a 1-1 draw with Thika United in mid-week.

On Wednesday Gor Mahia were determined getting off the blocks and Haron Shakava would give them the reward by heading in from an Innocent Mutiso cross in the 41st minute.

Dunga penalty

However, Tusker battled back and Gor were to pay for robust play in the box when Kevin Oluoch brought down Jesse Were. Ismail Dunga converted the penalty.

The Brewers were to end the game with nine men, Martin Kiiza and Lloyd Wahome seeing the red card within five minutes of each, a scenario to which reaction by Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi has caused much furor.

Kimanzi thinks Kiiza’s bash into Patrick Oboya which sent the Gor Mahia man to hospital was unintended and not warranting a send-off. But the coach’s further call that the league should see a champion made on the pitch and not assisted by referees’ decisions implied that the officials have an ulterior motive; contestable.

Crowd puller

There are other exciting match-ups this weekend, not least the fact that the other crowd puller, the struggling AFC Leopards, will be at home – at Mumias Sugar Company’s Sports Complex — on Saturday to Nakuru All Stars, Gor’s tormentors last weekend.

Tusker will be trying to retain their leadership on the table while on a tricky trip to Muhoroni where the local team has won two of their last two matches and are on three-match winning streak after beating Mathare United 1-0 in Machakos on Sunday.

Mathare will themselves also be travelling to Awendo to face third-placed Sony Sugar. Second-placed Chemelil have KRA at home.
