It’s hit ‘n miss for so-called big guns; no one in command

Gor were warned but didn’t heed, Sofapaka beaten, Tusker, Chemelil and Sony held

THE going got sticky and all the teams that were on a winning runs and the so-called big guns saw their wheels spinning, some coming off. None won but it was worse for Gor Mahia and Sofapaka who slumped to defeats.

In yet another thrilling Tusker Premier League weekend, the top placed Tusker, Chemelil and Sony Sugar were held to draws.

Gor Mahia were warned that Bandari would be fighting for their lives in Mombasa. Maybe the visitors did not heed and found rampaging hosts at the unusual Mombasa Municipal Stadium — Bandari traditionally play at  Kenya Ports Authority [KPA] Sports Club, Mbaraki — who stunned K’Ogalo 2-1, leaving the Nairobi team without a win in four matches, two of them defeats.

Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos

Earlier on Saturday, Sofapaka did not know what hit them after a furious Nairobi City Stars came raiding at Kenyatta Stadium Machakos and emphatically won 2-0.

Chemelil were held 0-0 at home by visiting Kenya Revenue Authority [KRA] on Saturday while on Sunday. So were another high rider Sony Sugar, limited to another scoreless brawl at Awendo by Mathare United.

The Premiership just gets more exciting. No one is in charge, not even unbeaten Tusker and Chemelil; they have now failed to win three and four times respectively.

Unlucky

On the bottom end, Nakuru All Stars finally won their first points in their previous outing against Gor Mahia and on the weekend they were unlucky to go down by a single strike from AFC Leopards at Mumias.

On a possible climb, All Stars may see the faces of teams such as KCB on the way down. The bankers keep hurtling down, and are now one place off the basement after a 3-0 thrashing by visiting Western Stima in Nairobi.

Sunday:

Bandari 2-1 Gor Mahia

Victor Majid scored the winner 15 minutes from time.

After Bandari went ahead five minutes before the break with an Alloys Mangi goal, Dan Sserunkuma drew Gor Mahia level converting a Godfrey Walusimbi’s free-kick on the hour mark. Walusimbi had hit the bar in the 47th minute.

Sony Sugar 0-0 Mathare United

Lowly Mathare United stifled Sony Sugar at Awendo, the match ending scoreless.

That pulled down Sony Sugar one place down from third, exchanging with Western Stima who routed KCB 3-0 in Nairobi.

Sony spurned some chances, including a penalty which Edwin Oduor could not convert in the 56th minute.

Ulinzi Stars 1-1 Thika United

Francis Ochieng’ the Ulinzi Stars goalie who has previously played as striker for club and country, scored a last gasp free-kick to snatch a point for Ulinzi at Afraha Stadium.

The Ulinzi goal provided Robert Matano with his first point on the opening day with his new club which fired the previous man in charge, Salim Ali.

Michael Olunga had given Thika United the lead just before the half time whistle.

Saturday:

AFC Leopards 1-0 Nakuru All Stars

At Mumias Sugar Company’s sports complex, Leopards went ahead after five minutes with Jackson Saleh slotting home but it was going to a tense game for the rest of the time as Leopards fought off a storm.

Nakuru All Stars, the previous weekend’s shock 2-0 winners over Gor Mahia, appeared intent on bringing down another giant but Leopards had apparently been warned.

Sofapaka 1-2 Nairobi City Stars

At Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos, City Stars were on first half fire, Dennis Ng’ang’a striking in the 21st minute and George Abege in the 28th, leaving Sofapaka with the uphill task to come back.

Anthony Ndolo managed a goal in the 84th minute but it proved the only a consolation for Sofapaka.

Muhoroni Youth 1-1 Tusker

League leaders Tusker found a stubborn Muhoroni Youth on their own turf and had to wait until the 61st minute for Jesse Were’s breakthrough.

However, Muhoroni found the equaliser with seven minutes left when Enos Ochieng’ struck home.

KCB 0-3 Western Stima

The bankers had another indifferent performance going down heavily to visiting Western Stima at the national stadium.

Shaffique Batambuze was on the mark inside five minutes, and then Collins Netto and Wesley Kemboi secured the win.

Chemelil Sugar 0-0 KRA

Visiting Kenya Revenue Authority were the happier of the two teams in this barren draw at Awasi. On the other the home side would feel like they lost more chances.

But former Tusker man Joseph Emeka was guilty of throwing away one of KRA’ opportunities, failing to control a 30-yard pass while through on goal in the second half allowing the Chemelil defence to recover and close him down.
