Four winners in each category for Cecafa teams but going tough on Africa scene

Al Malakia of South Sudan had a historic welcome in Juba, of Nigeria giants Kano Pillars. It was remarkable that the match took place there amid the civil war in that country and even more surprising that Malakia avoided a walloping by their illustrious adversaries

THE Cecafa (Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations) region had four winners in the [Africa] Champions League during the opening round’s first leg schedule over the weekend.

Tanzania champions, Azam, had a remarkable 2-0 home triumph over Khartoum giants Al Merreikh while Merreikh’s arch rivals back home in Omdurman were doing the reverse, whipping by the same margin a Tanzania side, KMKM of Zanzibar.

Scraped through

Other Cecafa winners of the day were Kenya champions Gor Mahia who scraped through with a penalty-induced 1-0 win over Madagascar’s CNaPS in Nairobi and Kampala Capital City Authority [KCCA] won 1-0 over Cosmos Football Academy de Bafia of Cameroon.

The rest of the regional flag bearers faltered, their chances dwindling ahead of the return matches in a fortnight. Al Malakia of South Sudan had a historic welcome in Juba, of Nigeria giants Kano Pillars. It was remarkable that the match took place there amid the civil war in that country and even more surprising that Malakia avoided a walloping by their illustrious adversaries.

Recover

St George’s of Ethiopia fell 0-1 away in Morocco — to MC El Eulma. The other team, APR of Rwanda did well away from home drawing 0-0 with Liga Muculmana of Mozambique.

There were also four victories for Cecafa teams in the CAF Confed Cup — URA (Uganda), Young Africans of Tanzania, Dedebit of Ethiopia and Rayon Sport (Rwanda) all, winning — but an equal number fell. The losers, who must seek to recover in the return legs, were Al-Ghazal of South Sudan, Le Messager of Burundi, Kenya’s Sofapaka and Polisi of Zanzibar.
